This study aims to determine land use change and runoff using the USDA Soil Conservation Service curve number (SCS-CN) method for Chaka block, located at 24o 47'00"N to 25o 47'00"N North latitude and 81o 19'00"E to 82o 21'00"E longitude, situated at Allahabad district, Uttar Pradesh .Antecedent moisture content (AMC) was calculated by taking preceding five days rainfall which gave three conditions AMC I, AMC II and AMC III. Weighted Curve Number for the entire selected micro-watershed was calculated based on site information of the block and found to be 78 for AMC II. The CN values corresponding to AMC I and AMC III were 59.82 and 89.08 respectively. The runoff for each storm events was estimated following Curve Number method and it is found that among the selected storm events maximum rainfall of 203 mm occurred in September 1, 2000 generating 169.89 mm of runoff. Runoff volume of the micro-watershed for each storm events were also calculated and maximum runoff is found is 26.09 million m³. This value will be useful for design of soil and water conservation structures in block. The simulation of runoff events it is observed that the value of estimated runoff and simulated runoff

Diwakar Sumant, Kaur Surinder, Patel Nilanchal Hydrological Modeling in Middle Narmada Basin, India using SWAT Model

Narmada, a river in central India flows in a rift valley through the state of Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Gujarat is the important source of water supply and ground water recharge. Therefore watershed management planning and water resource management can be improved in rift valley after accurate simulation of hydrologic processes. In this study the SWAT (Soil and Water Assessment Tool) was used on Middle Narmada basin. The basic objective of the present study is to derive the parameters required for runoff modelling using the remote sensing and geospatial database and estimate the runoff of the Middle Narmada basin. The main input data for simulation of SWAT including Digital Elevation Model (DEM), Land use, Soil type, soil properties and hydro-climatological data, were appropriately collected. By providing all the inputs for model set up, SWAT model was simulated for the period of 15 years (1995-2010). The average annual surface runoff is about 244.54 mm. The model was calibrated and validated using SUFI-2 algorithm. The sensitivity analysis of the model to sub-basin delineation and Hydrological Response Unit (HRU) definition thresholds showed that the flow is more sensitive.

This has led to adverse effects on surface run off and climatic system as a whole. Research on these hydrological changes at basin scale is of great importance to the water managers for the future planning and management of water resources. The Thika River catchment is of great importance to Kenya and plays host to Ndakaini Dam which provides about 84% of Nairobi's water supply to a population of over 3 million residents, whose contribution to Kenya's Gross Product is 60%. Observed climatic variability and trends for Thika catchment were assessed for significance with Mann Kendall's trend test and discussed in light of future climate variability scenarios. The results indicate that the catchment has become relatively warmer over the last four decades. The annual precipitation and means of daily mean temperatures over the past 30 years has increased by about 7.8 mm (although not statistically significant), and 2.14°C respectively. The trend for the annual mean of daily temperatures was statistically significant.
